Abstract

This paper examines the role of local ecological knowledge in the management of one common pool resource, the artisanal fishery at Buritizeiro, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The research, which focussed on the formation of local institutions and the factors which contributed to the development of these institutions, was carried out between 1999 and 2001.
