Fishers in the Gaza Strip, which has been under a blockade by Israel, have taken to smuggling fish. They bring fish and other seafood from the neighbouring Egypt through underground tunnels in Rafah city. At times, they sneak into the Egyptian waters in small motorboats to buy their catch, risking gunfire from the Israeli navy. Even though the Medit-erranean Sea is right at Gaza’s doorstep, people are creating fish ponds to provide the blockaded territory’s 1.5 million people their key source of protein.
