Abstract

The plot around special economic zones (sezs) in India thickens with a recent decision of the empowered group of ministers (egom) on sezs to remove a cap of 150 on the number of such zones in the country. The number of sezs will now go up, but only after reviewing the condition of 75 sezs once they become operational, says Pranab Mukherjee, chairperson of egom. At present 28 sezs are functional in the country and about 164 have received in-principle nod.
