Abstract

The status of aquaculture and management practices of the primarily un-managed ox-bow lakes (beels) of Assam was studied in two districts viz., Sivasagar and Jorhat. Primary data on fishery components was collected with the help of structured interview schedule and soil and water quality parameters were assessed with the available secondary data. Soil was alluvial, acidic in nature and nutrient status was found to be poor. The average yield was reported to be 68 and 108.5 kg ha-1 yr-1 in Sivasagar and Jorhat district respectively. The overall status of the beels indicated highly significant variations (p< 0.01) with regards to fish yield and weed infestation. The survey revealed strong negative correlation (-0.78) between fish yield and degree of weed infestation.
