Abstract

Many factors have contributed to the extreme deterioration of the fishery resources in the Southeast Asian waters. These could include over-exploitation of the limited resources linked with excessive fishing capacity, irresponsible use of destructive fishing gears and practices, and absence of appropriate regulatory system for fisheries. Such worsening state of the regions’ fishery resources has brought significant impacts aggravating poverty in the region’s fisheries communities. In an effort to mitigate the impact of the deteriorating fishery resources on the socioeconomic conditions of the small-scale fishers, SEAFDEC has been promoting responsible fishing practices and methods as well as improving fisheries management towards sustainable development goals.
