Abstract

This paper presents the result of a study which investigated the technical efficiency of gillnet fishing vessels in Da Nang, Vietnam in 2009 using a stochastic production frontier, which involved the simultaneous estimation of a translog stochastic frontier model and a model for vessel-specific technical inefficiencies. Other important determinants of gillnet fishing fleet were also examined such as output elasticities, returns to scale and marginal productivities of inputs. An inefficiency model was subsequently developed to determine the relevant vessel- and operator-specific factors that could affect the technical efficiency of gillnet fishery. Given the estimated stochastic production frontier model, the ability to determine the potential factors that affect the efficiency and the production process could be investigated.
