Several concepts related to ecosystem management have been promoted since the 60s including those that aim to boost the sustainable management of fisheries. One of such schemes is the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) which had been adopted during the FAO Technical Consultation on Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management in 2002 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Although EAF could be generally considered as a new concept, the Southeast Asian countries have been implementing similar initiatives since the late 90s in accordance with the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. These endeavours have been anchored in the broad principles of and approaches for effective and responsible fisheries management, many of which are closely related to the concepts of EAF.
