Since time immemorial, mankind has been reaping the benefits of a myriad of resources from natural ecosystems. Given the present state of advancements however, such benefits may not be able to sustainably render ecosystem services necessary for the well-being of human due to natural causes and the impacts of anthropogenic activities. Specifically, fisheries as one of the most important ecosystem services provided by marine and freshwater aquatic ecosystems may not be able to sustain its role in providing food and income to peoples in the long run. Although not a very optimistic insight but based on numerous reports, marine resources in general have been over-exploited while freshwater resources have been continually challenged by man-made interference courtesy of massive constructions of dams and other water barriers resulting in overly reduced water flows.
