Abstract

Sustainability has emerged as an umbrella concept beneath which integration of the many interrelated issues of environment and human development can occur. There are two distinct aspects to this. The first is the overarching concept of sustainability, which is the long-term and difficult goal of reaching an ecologically sustainable state. The variable process by which we might move somewhat nearer to this goal is sustainable development, a subsidiary notion. The two are not the same.
