Abstract

Fishers from Ninh Thuan Province, Viet Nam had been using two main kinds of lamps on their purse seine vessels, namely: fluorescent tube and metalhalide lamps. It was not until recently that the use of light emitting diode (LED) light for purse seiners was practiced in Ninh Thuan. Thus, a case study was carried out in the Province, the initial results showed that LED light achieved salient advantages in fishing. Although the power of LED light used on the experimental vessel was relatively lower than that of the control vessel (3 vs. 12 kilowatts), illumination and useful light areas increased by about 1.4 and 2.3 times, respectively.
