Abstract

Since 1985, the Department of fisheries (DOF), Government of Thailand, has been promoting socio-economic development projects for small-scale fisheries communities both in the Gulf of Thailand and on the Andaman Coast. In the early phase, most of the activities were concentrated on developing coastal aquaculture as an alternative for income- generation and as an additional means of food supply. Later, the intervention has been expanded to meet the various needs of the social and economic life of the communities which live under the poverty line.
