I am most honoured to have been invited by the Company of Master Mariners and the Navy League to deliver the 1999 Boulton Lecture. Through their publications and other promotional activities, these two organisations are eloquent and forceful members of the maritime community in Australia that do much to promote maritime awareness among the wider Australian community.
