Abstract

In 1987 the New Zealand Parliament passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Act 1987 (see Appendix 1). The Act established in New Zealand a Nuclear Free Zone to promote and encourage an active and effective contribution by New Zealand to the process of disarmament and international arms control and to implement in New Zealand a number of disarmament and international arms control treaties. Although the Act prohibited nuclear powered ships from entering New Zealand ports, it did not prevent the transit of nuclear powered ships or ships carrying nuclear materials through the zone.
