This paper reviews the status of Vietnam as an ocean nation and the extent of Vietnamese ocean interests. It outlines the institutional mechanisms and legal system which has been developed in response to the needs of managing these ocean interests and to conform with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Particular issues considered include the protection and preservation of the marine environment fisheries, marine scientific research and the delimitation of maritime boundaries.
