An exploratory study of the impact of major oil spills on the share price of the oil company responsible for that spill was attempted. Only five spills out of thirty-two occurring in the past thirty years could be laid at the door of the beneficial owners of the companies responsible. Each of these five cases was examined, using an event study on share price reaction around the time of the spill. It would appear that oil companies do not suffer any negative abnormal stock returns as a result of being involved in such disasters.
