The Coast Guard has been set up to meet the demands of socio-economic development, security and defence of Vietnam. The Governmental Declaration of 12 May 1997 on Vietnamese maritime zones and the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS) by the Assembly National on 23 June 1994 permitted the extension of national jurisdiction over maritime zones and continental shelf of about 1 million sq. km.
