Abstract
The importance of maritime issues in the Asia Pacific region and the complexity of the regional maritime environment dictate the need for maritime cooperation in the region. Common maritime interests (such as shipping, fishing, marine safety, marine environmental protection and offshore hydrocarbons) figure prominently in the dialogue between countries in the region, and in global forums involving these countries and the rest of the world.
