Abstract

Australia is of course an island, which we persist in thinking of as a continent. Its military mythology revolves around memories of infantry battles and great wars. Yet its destiny has been profoundly shaped by the strategic use of the sea from the days of the sailing fleets onwards - something it shares (although not exclusively) with the rest of the Englishspeaking diaspora.
