Abstract

Human error induced by fatigue will probably be the cause if there is ever a major oil spill in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has logged human error as the reason for five of the seven most recent groundings, and an inquiry is currently under way to establish why the 22,000-tonne bulk carrier New Reach hit Heath Reef last May.
