Abstract
Inter-regional and intra-regional trade in the APEC region is mainly carried by sea. The ‘archipelagic’ nature of the region and the lack of road or rail infrastructure in East Asia in particular mean there is no alternative mode of transport for regional trade except for high value commodities carried by air.
