Abstract

On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. Eliada dos Santos Avelino has been fishing since she was 12 years old. In the mangroves of the Canavieiras Extractive Reserve in Bahia in northeast Brazil, she and other women gather aratu (Goniopsis cruentata), mud crabs unique to this region. The women work collectively, operating their boats, harvesting and processing the catch before marketing it. "We feel good when we are fishing," she says.
