Abstract

On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. Luis Alberto Marín Saenz is a small-scale fisherman, part of the Marine Responsible Fishing Area of Tambor in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. "Fishing becomes harder and harder as time goes by," says Luis, describing the challenges he faces. His fishing trips have grown longer and Covid-19 has all but washed away the local economy. But, the fishing communities of Costa Rica have always found a way to survive and thrive.
