Flyingfish is an important commercial species in several areas of eastern Indonesia. They have been utilised for generations by local communities that live in the west and south coast of Sulawesi. It is estimated that more than 3,825 families, or about 19,125 people, of the District of Majene in West Sulawesi depend on flyingfish in the Macassar Strait. However, inappropriate management has resulted in inconsistent capture and production rates of flyingfish. The inconsistency in production is the first indication of unsustainable fishing practices and overfishing.
