Community leaders from the Pacific were in Washington, D.C. recently to share the successes of a unique coral reef restoration initiative, which rehabilitates reefs while sustaining rural livelihoods. The Coral Gardens initiative of Counterpart International also aims to enhance the cultural heritage of coastal regions. Environmental leaders, representatives from multilateral agencies and private foundations lauded the success of the Coral Gardens programme in restoring reefs that in turn rejuvenate fisheries, and the local communities that feed off them. Coral Gardens sites are in the Melanesian archipelagos of Fiji and Solomon Islands.
