In many coastal areas, flooding is aggravated by stronger and more frequent storms, which scientists attribute to climate change. The impact on agriculture is devastating. The cyclone Aila, for instance, destroyed rice fields in the Ganges Delta in 2009. A local non-governmental organisation has since re-introduced traditional varieties of rice, which are saline-tolerant.
