Abstract

On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. In the Netherlands, Freerk Visserman, a fourth-generation inland fisherman, shared his experience of catching and smoking eel. He talked about how he contributes to building a healthy eel population by releasing legal glass eels in the Westeinderplassen lake. Glass eels are baby eels that migrate from the sea to freshwater to grow into eels. He also helps by releasing matured (adult) eels back from freshwater to the sea to migrate back to their spawning grounds. This life cycle of eels is interrupted by Dutch water management systems, which prevent their movement back and forth between freshwater ecosystems and the sea.
