Abstract

On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. Freerk Visserman's family has been fishing in the rich freshwater lakes in The Netherlands for eight generations. 'What I love about my job is the freedom," says Freerk, describing his work fishing on a small boat in the Heegermeer lake in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. As part of the Frisian Association of Inland Fishermen, committed to the sustainable restoration of local eel stocks, he markets his fresh, responsibly caught fish under the Fryske Fisker brand.
