On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. Wanna Sawasdee started working in the small-scale fisheries in Ao Yai, Trat province in Thailand when she got married 30 years ago. It's her duty to mend the nets, check all the equipment and supplies before a fishing trip and to sell the catch brought in by her husband. When Covid-19 struck Thailand in 2020, all seafood sales ceased briefly in Ao Yai. Now, demand is slowly picking up. "We are a small family," says Wanna. "Large families dependent on SSF may have a lot more problems."
