Abstract

On World Ocean Day (8 June), we celebrate the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishing communities around the world. Sak Sawasdee has seen a lot of change in the 30 years that he has been fishing off the coast of Trat province in Thailand. For one, the sea is getting warmer. Shrimp, mussels, crabs and fish are no longer as abundant as they were. There is also greater fishing effort as boats and gear have gotten bigger, competing with artisanal fishers like Sawasdee. He explains how he he's coped with the economic impacts of Covid-19 and the support he'd like to see for the livelihoods of Thailand's crucial small-scale fisheries.
