Japan has no aquaculture development in mangrove areas because the area suitable for aquaculture is limited. Japan's total mangrove area is only 553 ha (>80 mangrove communities), mostly in Kagoshima to Okinawa. The mangroves in Iriomote Island account for 80% of the total. There is strict protection of these mangroves. Some areas are protected as 'natural monuments.' Rather than aquaculture, enhancement and management of fishery resources — sea ranching — are expected to improve the sustainable utilization in mangrove areas.
