Abstract

Performance appraisal (PA) is not just a system designed to enable workers to achieve their full potential. It is also a system designed to enable employers to apply negative sanctions to those who fail to achieve a (sometimes arbitrary) level of performance, satisfactory to the employer. More consideration, therefore, needs to be given to this disciplinary aspect of appraisal systems. This article seeks, precisely, to examine this aspect of performance appraisal and to consider a number of dimensions of possible legal control over abusive behaviour on the part of employers in relation to this system.
