In most developing countries, the home frequently also serves as workplace, as housing offers to many low-income households the means of acquiring a modest but stable income at low risk. In this article, the author describes the most common types of home-based activities and gives an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of such small enterpises, of their profitability and of the measures that could be taken both to ease the difficulties they encounter and to improve the fate of the inhabitants. -Author
