Abstract

Ever since the "invention" of the concept of the informal sector by K. Hart (1971), and especially the first appearance thereof in an official report (ILO, 1972), ample attention has been given to its employment aspects. Initially, the informal sector was seen as a temporary phenomenon and little need was felt for the collection of statistics at national level.
