Abstract

In February 2006, the Maritime Session of the International Labour Conference adopted a consolidated maritime labour Convention. This instrument represents a major breakthrough in several respects. Not only does it embody a comprehensive maritime labour code designed to protect over 1.2 million seafarers worldwide, but it is also highly innovative compared with previous international labour standards in terms of format, content and procedures for revision.
