Scientists led by Alan White1 suggested that although the use of scrap materials (like car tires) in generating artificial reefs may be an economic way to solve solid waste disposal problems on land ... it may damage marine habitats. Scrap materials can release toxic pollutants to marine food chains. Some may even add to the already increasing debris in coastal waters.
