Abstract

Dr. I-Chiu Liao, world-renowned aquaculture scientist, made a sentimental journey all the way from Keelung, Taiwan to Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines just to see his old friends at the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (AQD) on 28-31 July. Dr. Liao had recently retired from the Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute, after 34 years of dedicated and outstanding service, as Director General since 1987, and before that, as Director of the Tungkang Marine Laboratory (TML, a TFRI branch) since 1968. Dr. Liao was born in Tokyo on 4 Nov 1936 to a Taiwanese father and Japanese mother, grew up and went to school in Taiwan, and obtained his MSc and PhD from the University of Tokyo.
