Abstract

This paper examines coastal management training needs in Australia. The paper outlines the Commonwealth of Australia's funding arrangements for coastal management training in each of the States and the Northern Territory. Results of a national survey carried out to gauge coastal management training needs are presented together with the outcomes of its recommendations. A discussion of the main coastal management training needs in each State is included, focusing on South Australia. This paper describes current capacity building efforts, highlights the differences between Australian States regarding their needs for coastal management training, explains in detail how coastal management training needs have been approached in South Australia and suggests mechanisms to improve current education and training practices in that State.
