In Cook Islands, Fisheries Development Officer William Sokimi focused on training potential crew for the country’s developing and expanding domestic tuna longline fleet. The training was organised by the Ministry of Marine Resources, with funding from New Zealand. The training aimed at increasing the number of local people crewing aboard tuna longline vessels, through teaching them skills. Many of the trainees were from the outer islands, where employment opportunities are very limited. Fisheries staff, as well as five crew from the longline vessel F/V Mahr Leena, also attended the training.
