Skipjack tuna are the most important tuna resource in the WCPO, in terms of contribution by weight to the total catch. In the past decade, skipjack tuna catches have been approximately 1 million mt per year, contributing about 63% to the total tuna catch from the region. The 2001 catch was slightly more than 1.2 14 million mt, the second highest catch on record. The purse-seine fishery accounted for most of this catch (69%) with 24% from the pole-and-line fishery.
