Abstract
In recent years, the annual world catch of the four main tropical tuna species (skipjack, yellowfin, bigeye and albacore) approached four million tonnes, with two thirds of the production coming from the Pacific Ocean. Skipjack are the most productive tuna species, and economic, rather than biological, factors limit increases in skipjack catch. This is illustrated by the 60% drop in skipjack prices between 1998 and 2000.
