What do turtles, terrorism, cocaine, shrimps and the recent World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg have to do with fishing for tuna in the Pacific? They matter considerably if you are trying to forecast the future of US purseseine and longline tuna fisheries in the Pacific. The US purse-seine fleet has operated in the central and western Pacific since the early 1980s, based in American Samoa and supplying skipjack and yellowfin tuna to two canneries in Pago Pago.
