Abstract

The FAD research project is approaching the end of the second year of this three-year project. Fifteen FADs were deployed from March to April 2002 (eight around Niue, four around Rarotonga, and three around Aitutaki). Of the 15 FADs, two have been lost – one off Niue (after 10 months) and one off Aitutaki (after eight months). The Niue FAD was set in shallow water (400 m) using 150 m of 9.0 mm galvanised wire cable to replace the nylon rope normally used in the upper mooring.
