Abstract

The mouth of the Devi river in Puri District (19°57' N & 86° 22' E) is one of the three mass nesting beaches along the Orissa coast. Mass nesting of ridley turtles was first reported in this area by Kar (1981) and later, Pandav (1997) conducted a systematic study of nesting and mortality. The offshore waters of this coast are not protected, unlike Gahirmatha, which has been declared as a Marine Sanctuary.
