Abstract

Over the last five years the debate about coral reefs and poverty has focussed on: The conservation of reefs with reef-dependent people being considered more as part of the problem and less as possible victims of reef changes. Linked to this, the debate has included the relative values of reefs to global biodiversity, tourism, science, coastal protection, fisheries, society as a whole, and, only more recently, to poverty reduction; and how to harmonise these competing uses.
