Education and public awareness are essential to reverse the loss of biological diversity. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Consultative working group of experts, charged with developing and testing a global initiative on biological diversity education and public awareness, as a follow-up of decision adopted at the Fifth Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, held a meeting from 5-7 November 2001 in Bilbao, Spain.
