The main staple for Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean, rice has mostly been developed by farmers and modernised by the public sector. But as the limitations of the Green Revolution become harder and harder to ignore, biotechnologies and biotech companies are being courted by public sector research institutions to offer solutions to the sustainability problem. Despite the hype, it seems that biotech’s promises are little more than Green Revolution solutions in fancy new packaging. This article has mainly been researched by GRAIN staffer Anna-Rosa Martinez i Prat, and draws heavily from ‘Biopiracy, TRIPs and the Patenting of Asia’s Rice Bowl.’
