Some countries in South America have embraced the agribusiness giants and turned to export-oriented, intensive agriculture as a keystone for their economic growth. Dollars coming in have made governments insensitive to the obvious environmental and social costs, and the implications for long-term food security. The agribusiness corporations are now turning to genetic engineering as a way to increase their grip on all aspects of food production system. Here, we discuss the consequences.
