Abstract
Until recently, Colombia was self-sufficient in its staple crops, such as maize, rice, beans, sorghum, and soybean. These staples were mainly raised by small farmers. However, globalization, widespread violence and agrarian counter-reform led by drug traffickers and paramilitary armies have resulted in the best agricultural land being used for export crops. This has resulted in increasing difficulties for smaller farmers to ensure food security. Colombia now depends on imported staples, while maintaining its agricultural exports of coffee, flowers, and bananas.
