Abstract

The growth of the aquaculture sector has been spurred by an ever-increasing demand for seafood, combined with a limited supply of wild fish. Over the years, per capita seafood consumption has increased as the world’s population has grown. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that by 2030 the world will need an additional 40 million metric tonnes of aquatic food. The FAO also warns that about three-quarters of wild stocks are fully fished, over-fished, or depleted. As a result, any future increases in seafood production are expected to come from aquaculture.
