Fisheries sector has made great strides during the last five decades with the production levels increasing from mere 0.75 million t offish and shellfish in 1950-51 to over 4.9 million t in 1995-96.The fish production has increased by 6.6% on an average per annum since the beginning of Seventh Five Year Plan. Out of the total yield of 4.8 million t during 1994-95, the marine and inland sectors have yielded 2.8 and 2.04 million tonnes respectively. In the inland sector, it is reported that about 70% of the production is met through aquaculture and the rest from open water fisheries.
